Who doesn’t like the idea of being able to wipe the slate clean? We all love a fresh start. It’s been a rough year for most of us. In 2020 our lives as we’ve known them have been turned upside down and we’ve all had to make adjustments in order to accommodate all the unexpected twists and turns the year has brought us. If nothing else 2020 has given us all a lot to think about.
Which is why 2021 might be the most opportune year for setting personal and achievable goals that we’ve ever had.
If you feel like the goals you set for 2020 basically just flew right out the window from day 1, you’re definitely not alone. As it turned out for most of us, 2020 just wasn’t a good year for goals and goal setting. But the one thing that 2020 did do was it allowed us to really take a hard look at what we already have both the good and the bad and gave us time to really appreciate the things that mean the most to us. Which is why I think it gives us all the more reason to really take some time, this year and think about what goals we want to achieve and how we can each make 2021 the best year yet.
7 keys to setting goals we can achieve
Be Realistic
It’s important that whatever goals you set aren’t too far out of your reach. It’s fair to say that in a lot of ways we took a step back and still have a ways to go before all the craziness of 2020 is complete. Be realistic in what goals you set in order to insure they’re achievable.
Quick and painless
A good idea to start the year out right is to make some very simple and easily attainable goals to get the ball rolling. It can something as simple as making your bed each morning, or giving a compliment to at least on person a day, or sweeping the walkway to your door or smile at a stranger once a day. Something easy that doesn’t take much out of you that isn’t an upheaval of your routine and habits but an enhancer, one that is positive in nature but gets that goal achieving muscle working.
Go big or go home…even if your already home
Once that muscle is being built in a positive direction then begin work on those bigger goals. The Sky is in fact the limit so reach for the stars or keep it modest. You know you… do for you, what you know you can do, Know what limitations you face and what abilities you have at your disposal and at just what level you can exercise those abilities and or work within those limitations.
Cut once Measure twice
Make sure your goals are measurable. It’s best and most effective when you can cut them up into little chunks. Compartmentalize and bring each portion to fruition then bring those pieces together in the end.
Timing is everything
Make sure your goals have a time limit. The easiest way to never reach your goals is to allow them to be open ended. Set a date, again be realistic start small compartmentalize them and have an end date for their achievement. You may have to make some adjustments along the way and thats okay, but make sure theres a specific day for that achievement to happen.
Start Write Now
Start thinking about what you want to achieve most this year and what you think you can achieve this year and put it in writing. The difference between writing it down and seeing it written and not… is huge. Write it in a note book on a sticky note, create a notification in your phone, make it the home screen on your phone, put it in your calendar. Wherever you can think of that you’ll see it on a daily basis. I would go as far as to suggest all the above. Remember you haven’t really set a goal if you haven’t made sure you can stay focused on it. Because otherwise it was nothing more than just a good idea, that may never come to pass. Your goals are yours, but you wouldn’t be making them if they weren’t important to you. So what may sound like overkill, is anything but. There is no such thing when it comes to you achieving the things that are most important to you.
Enjoy it
Nobody ever said goal setting and achieving those goals had to be a daunting task. Make 2021 a great year and have a great time doing it!!!!
